Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation (TOKYO:8036, Hitachi High-Tech) today announced the development of the Ratio Beam Spectrophotometer U-5100, a user-friendly system that offers a small footprint, energy savings, and excellent design qualities. Sales of the U-5100 to universities, research institutions and other customers around the world are started in April , 2010.

A spectrophotometer is a device for measuring the density of substances in a test sample by directing a beam of white light split into individual colors using a prism or diffraction grating at a sample and detecting the wavelengths of light that pass through. With a wide range of applications in academic and industrial fields such as materials science, environment, pharmaceuticals, and biotechnology, spectrometers have already proven useful in research and development. Excitation and fluorescence wavelengths of an unknown sample are automatically selected and set. High sensitivity measurement by the S/N ratio of 450 or more with the Raman spectrum of water and measurement of the concentration in a range of 6 orders of magnitude without adjusting the sensitivity are possible. A multistage slit (2.5-20nm) allows to cover a wide range of samples. Various accessories including intracellular Ca measurement are lined up.

  A highly efficient diffraction grating and a low noise detector system have achieved high sensitivity measurement of the Raman spectrum of water with the S/N ratio of 450 or more (band pass of 10nm, response of 2 seconds). Since measurement and result can be displayed by one-touch operation, confirmation is easy.
• Measures the concentration in a range of about 6 orders of magnitude without adjusting the sensitivity.
  Display range is 0.001-9999. Cumbersome sensitivity adjustment is automatically conducted by the computer. A calibration curve can be created in a concentration range of about 6 orders of magnitude. Quantitative measurement of a sample with unknown concentration can be conducted especially easily.
